Share of Voice
Share of voice is your brand's portion of all the visibility in a market, as a percentage: your ads, mentions or impressions divided by the total for you and your competitors. AI share of voice applies the same idea to AI answers: how often models name you versus competitors for the same questions.

What share of voice means
Share of voice (SOV) started as an advertising measure: your brand's share of all the ad spend or ad impressions in a category. Today it is used for any channel where brands compete for attention. The formula is the same everywhere:
Share of voice (%) = your brand's measure ÷ the total for all tracked brands × 100.
What changes is the measure:
Advertising. Your ads or ad impressions as a share of all ads from you and the competitors you track.
Search and SEO. Your share of impressions or clicks for a set of category keywords.
Social and PR. Your share of brand mentions in posts and articles.
AI share of voice. Your share of brand mentions in AI answers to the same set of buying questions. In a hypothetical set of answers that name you 20 times and your competitors 80 times, your AI share of voice is 20%.
Share of voice only means something against a defined set: the same competitors, the same keywords or prompts, and the same period. Change the set and the number changes.
Why it matters for an ecommerce brand
Most tracked stores advertise. In September 2026, 103 of the 179 tracked stores whose ads RivalSweeper checked (58%) ran at least one brand-verified ad on Meta or Google (Online Retail Radar, September 2026). A share-of-voice number tells you whether you are being heard in that noise or out-shouted, and it is easy to compare month to month.
AI answers add a channel where share of voice is easy to miss. When a shopper asks an AI model which brands to buy, the answer names a few brands and leaves the rest out. Most analytics tools do not show those answers, and they do not show how often competitors are named, so the practical way to know your share is to ask the same questions on a schedule and count who gets named.
How to track share of voice
1. Fix the set. Pick the competitors and, for each channel, the keywords, prompts or ad libraries you will measure. Keep the set stable so month-to-month numbers compare.
2. Count the same thing for every brand. Ads live, keyword impressions or brand mentions: one measure per channel, the same for all brands.
3. Calculate each brand's share. Divide each brand's count by the total for the set, per channel and per period.
4. Track AI answers separately. Ask the same buying questions on a schedule and log which brands each answer names, and in what order.
RivalSweeper's AI visibility tracking samples Google Gemini and OpenAI GPT models and shows how they describe and recommend you versus competitors. It does not query ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Perplexity as products.
5. Read the change, not just the level. A falling share tells you where to look: a competitor's new campaign, a new ad push, or a model that stopped naming you. RivalSweeper also tracks competitors' Meta ads, homepage banners and marketing messages, which show who is pushing a new campaign.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate share of voice?
Share of voice (%) = your brand's measure ÷ the total for all tracked brands × 100. The measure depends on the channel: ads or ad impressions, keyword impressions, brand mentions, or mentions in AI answers. If you have 30 of the 120 ads live across you and your competitors, your advertising share of voice is 25%.
What is the difference between share of search and share of voice?
Share of search, a metric popularized by Les Binet, is your brand's share of the organic branded searches in a category: searches for your brand name divided by the searches for you and your competitors. It measures the demand people express. Share of voice measures the attention brands generate, such as ads, impressions or mentions. Read together, share of voice is the attention your brand gets and share of search is the demand people show for it.
What is share of voice in AI?
AI share of voice is how often AI models name your brand, compared with competitors, when asked the same buying questions. The simplest version is calculated like any share of voice: your mentions ÷ all brand mentions across the answers × 100. There is no standard method yet, and some tools also weight a mention by its position in the answer, so only compare numbers produced the same way. RivalSweeper's AI visibility tracking samples Google Gemini and OpenAI GPT models and shows how they describe and recommend you versus competitors.
