Black Friday 2026 Rival Watch

When do ecommerce brands really start Black Friday? Every week until the end of December we check the ads, emails, social posts, promo bars, homepages and sale pages of the stores RivalSweeper monitors, and compare them with the week before. Ten days after Christmas, a final wrap-up shows who is still pushing Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas promotions.

Latest check: Oct 16 (Oct 9-16), 42 days before Black Friday (Friday, November 27, 2026). Compared with the Oct 8 check.

This week in one line

The first moves are here, and they look exactly like last season's first movers: a Black Friday sign-up ad with no Black Friday discount, and a "Cyber Monday leak" email from the brand that went early last year.

The stores we can read change a little from week to week (new stores, sites that blocked our reader that day), so compare the matches and the shares, not only the totals. Google ads are not counted: their text is not readable, so "zero" there would not be true. Sale-page counts use one fixed rule every week, so the October 8 figures differ slightly from our October 8 blog post (147 brands, 11 titled 2026), which used a one-off hand review.

Same stores, both weeks

346 stores had a readable homepage in both windows (October 1-8 and October 9-16). 15 linked a Black Friday page in the first window and 16 in the second: one UK fashion brand added Black Friday to its homepage menu. None removed it.

Update October 16, 2026: what changed since Oct 8

  • First Black Friday ads of the season: a European home-decor retailer is running a sign-up ad, "Want to discover our exclusive Black Friday offers before anyone else?" No Black Friday discount, just a newsletter sign-up with a first-order welcome offer. It has been running since September 30 (58 days out; last season's first mover went at 70). It reached our ad data on October 12, after the October 8 check.
  • First Black Friday-season email: on October 15 a mid-size beauty brand emailed "this Cyber Monday leak is MAJOR" with 40% off. It is the same brand that opened a password-only Cyber Monday sale on October 14 last year, almost to the day.
  • Sale pages: 3 more brands retitled their Black Friday page to 2026, including a fragrance retailer whose page said "Black Friday Fragrance Deals 2025 - Sale Is Live" on October 8 and "2026" now. Two pages that said 2026 last week could not be read this week (blocked), so the 2026 count rose by one, from 12 to 13.
  • Homepages: flat. 4.7% of brands link a Black Friday page (5.0% on October 8), and still no homepage runs a Black Friday offer. Every match is a menu or footer link.
  • Promo bars and social posts: still zero. We read fewer fresh social posts this week (10), so that zero says little.

What to check on your own competitors this week

  1. Find each competitor's first Black Friday ad from last year. Note the date, not the busiest week.
  2. Open their Black Friday and Cyber Monday pages. Check the year in the title: a page retitled 2026 is getting ready.
  3. Watch for the first "be the first to know" ad, sign-up page or early-access code. Last season it came in September.

Questions

Have brands started Black Friday 2026 yet?

Barely, and quietly. In the check of October 9-16, 2026, 3 of 11,074 live Facebook and Instagram ads (all from one home-decor retailer) and 1 of 117 marketing emails mentioned Black Friday or Cyber Monday. The ads are newsletter sign-ups ("discover our exclusive Black Friday offers before anyone else"), not Black Friday discounts. 24 of 509 brands link a Black Friday page from their homepage, and 159 of 866 brands have a live Black Friday or Cyber Monday page, 13 of them already titled 2026.

When do brands start advertising Black Friday?

Last season, 31 of the 64 brands we track that advertised on Facebook and Instagram ran Black Friday or Cyber Monday ads. The typical brand ran its first one 11 days before Black Friday; the earliest ran 70 days before, with a sign-up ad that had no discount in it.

How often is the Rival Watch updated?

Once a week until the end of December 2026, then a final wrap-up on January 4, 2027, ten days after Christmas: how many brands are still pushing Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Christmas promotions. Every check is a fresh read of the same channels and is compared with the check before it. Old checks are never edited.

Methodology

  • Stores: the ecommerce stores RivalSweeper monitors, mostly fashion, beauty, home and lifestyle brands in the US and Europe. Not a random sample of all online retail.
  • Terms: Black Friday, Cyber Monday and BFCM in any case or joiner (black-friday, blackfriday, BLACK FRIDAY), plus the French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Hebrew names.
  • Christmas and holiday: counted separately, so the Black Friday numbers stay comparable week to week: Christmas and Xmas, Boxing Day, Black Week, Cyber Week, "holiday sale", "holiday deals", "holiday gifts", "holiday offers", and the French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch words for Christmas.
  • Homepages: only real homepages count (the page's own canonical address is the site root), and only visible text or a link in the menu or footer. Words hidden in scripts or menu data do not count. Several domains of one brand count once.
  • Sale pages: store pages with Black Friday or Cyber Monday in the address, each fetched live: it must load, keep the event in its final address and not be a 404 or a bot wall. Test collections, cart and email widgets, forum threads and untitled pages are removed by a fixed rule, the same every week. Sites that rate-limit us are re-checked slowly; those still unreadable are left out, not counted as gone.
  • Ads: Facebook and Instagram ads delivering during the check window: text, headline, image text and landing address. Google ads are not counted (no readable text).
  • Anonymized: no store or brand is named. Each number states what it is out of.
