One brand started Black Friday on October 26, a month early again

When did the first big Black Friday 2026 sale start?
On October 26, 32 days before Black Friday (Friday, November 27, 2026). A large activewear brand opened a members-only "Black Friday Early Access" sale at 30% off sitewide and emailed it the same day. In our check of October 24-29, its ads were 439 of the 444 live ads that mentioned Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Most brands have not moved: 10 of 227 homepages link a Black Friday page. For EU sellers, the 30-day window behind the "was" price of a discount that starts on November 27 opened on October 28.
The brand numbers come from our Black Friday 2026 Rival Watch, a weekly check of the brands RivalSweeper tracks, here the check of October 29. No brand is named. Background: how last season's first mover started 70 days out, with a sign-up ad and no discount.
What happened on October 26
A large activewear brand opened "Black Friday Early Access: 30% off sitewide" for its members. Its ads started on October 26 and 27 and reached our ad data on October 28. On October 26 it also emailed "30% off starts now". (Rival Watch, October 29 check)
It is not the season's first discount: a mid-size beauty brand started "Cyber Monday early access: 40% off almost everything" ads on October 12, and those no longer show in the live ads we read. It is the first big sale under the Black Friday name that we have seen.
In the week to October 23, 14 of 9,485 live Facebook and Instagram ads mentioned Black Friday or Cyber Monday, from 3 brands. In the week to October 29 it was 444 of 9,275, from 4 brands. 439 of the 444 are this brand's. The other 5 are sign-up ads, one of them a speaker brand's French-language ad for its Black Friday 2026 sale.
Takeaway: Black Friday ads rose more than 30-fold in a week. The brands behind them went from 3 to 4. Count brands, not ads.
What one early sale looks like, channel by channel

- Ads: volume. 439 Facebook and Instagram ads, all started on October 26 and 27.
- Email: the same day. 2 of the 77 marketing emails we read that week mentioned Black Friday, and both were this brand's October 26 email.
- Homepage: a members offer. The visible text on its homepage on October 28 led with "30% off sitewide for members" and an invitation to join. It did not say Black Friday, so it is not one of the 10 Black Friday homepages below.
- Other brands' homepages: mostly quiet. 10 of 227 brands (4.4%) link a Black Friday page from their homepage. For the first time this season, 3 of them show a Black Friday discount there: a watch brand's extra 30% off sitewide with a code, a UK wellbeing brand's 30% off travel candles and a sexual-wellness brand's "save up to 40%". No promo bar on 36 stores and none of 55 fresh social posts mentioned Black Friday.
- Sale pages: flat. 156 of 879 brands have a live Black Friday or Cyber Monday page, as many as a week earlier (156 of 873), and 13 are titled 2026.
Takeaway: the brand put the Black Friday name in its ads and in its email, in front of people it pays to reach and people who already know it. Its homepage sold membership. Watching a rival's homepage alone, you would have seen a members' sale, not a Black Friday launch.
Is Black Friday earlier this year?
Not across the board. Of 68 brands that advertised on Facebook and Instagram in both seasons, 4 had started Black Friday ads by 28 days before Black Friday, against 3 at the same point in 2025. The large activewear brand is one of the 3 from 2025: in 2025 too, its first Black Friday ad started about a month before Black Friday. Last season the typical brand ran its first Black Friday or Cyber Monday ad 11 days out. (Rival Watch)
Christmas still has more brands behind it. 105 of the same 9,275 ads mention Christmas or holiday gifts, from 7 brands, and so do 33 of the 227 homepages (14.5%). By ad count, Black Friday passed Christmas this week, 444 to 105. By brand count, Christmas still leads, 7 to 4. A week earlier it led on ads too, 77 to 14.
Shoppers already see plenty of discounts. In the same week, 33 of 135 brands (24.4%) put a percent-off offer on their homepage, at a median headline of 45%; in fashion, 14 of 71 brands at a median of 30%. Member and welcome offers are not counted as homepage offers, so the early-access sale is not in those two figures. At the median of 67 stores (263,932 product pages), 14.8% of products showed a "was" price, with the current price a median 30% below it. (Discount Check, October 29)
Takeaway: the season is not early. One big brand is, as it was last season, and it fills the ad count on its own. Its own calendar from last year pointed to this week.
When does the EU 30-day price window open for Black Friday 2026?
It opened on October 28. Under Article 6a of the EU Price Indication Directive (98/6/EC, added by the Omnibus Directive, 2019/2161), a trader that announces a price reduction must show the "prior" price: the lowest price it applied during at least the 30 days before the reduction. For a reduction that starts on November 27, those 30 days run from October 28 to November 26. For a Black Week sale starting on November 20, they run from October 21 to November 19. (Article 6a(2), quoted in the Commission's guidance, section 2.1; the 2019 amendment: European Commission)
The Commission's guidance on Article 6a (2021/C 526/02) adds four points that matter for a Black Friday plan:
- Earlier sale prices count. The lowest price includes any earlier reduced price in the 30 days (section 2.1). For successive Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Christmas campaigns within 30 days, each one's prior price is the lowest price of at least the past 30 days, including the previous promotion's reduced price (section 4.3). Member states may let a reduction that deepens step by step within one campaign, without a break, keep its first prior price (Article 6a(5)); the Commission reads that option narrowly.
- The percentage is worked out from the prior price, not from a higher price charged earlier (section 2.1).
- Members-only sales can count. Long-running loyalty discounts and truly personal offers fall outside Article 6a, but a members-only reduction is covered when the scheme is open to, or used by, many or most customers (section 2.3).
- "Black Friday offers" counts without a number when it gives the impression of a price reduction (section 1.1).
A summary of the Commission's guidance, not legal advice. Each member state writes the rule into its own law.
Takeaway: in the EU, an early sale can become the "was" price of your own Black Friday. What you charge from October 28 to November 26 is the evidence for a November 27 discount.
What to check this week
- Log the price of every product you plan to discount, every day from October 28. In the EU, the lowest of those is your prior price for November 27.
- Decide now whether you run early access, and what its price does to your Black Friday "was" price in each EU market, before it goes live.
- Start with your list. This season's first big mover used members, email and paid social.
- Check what each rival did at this point last year, then watch their ads, emails and homepages every week until Cyber Monday. This brand's first Black Friday ad came about a month out in both years. Count brands, not ads.
- Plan Christmas and Black Friday as one season. Christmas still has more brands behind it.

How we measured
- Brands: the ecommerce brands RivalSweeper tracks, mostly fashion, beauty, home and lifestyle brands in the US and Europe, not a random sample. Matches from our customers' own stores are not counted.
- Channels, October 24-29, 2026: live Facebook and Instagram ads, marketing emails we received, promo bars, social posts and true homepages, searched for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and BFCM, and separately for Christmas terms. Homepage matches were read by hand. Google ads are not counted: their text is not readable.
- Discount Check: 33 of 36 flagged homepage offers confirmed by hand; 106 of 108 sampled "was" prices matched the live page. Nothing is shown for fewer than 15 brands or stores. Full method on the research page.
