Free Shipping Threshold

A free shipping threshold is the minimum order value at which a store stops charging for delivery, for example free shipping on orders over $75. It is set to lift order value and to remove an extra cost that drives shoppers away at checkout.

What a free shipping threshold is

A free shipping threshold turns a delivery charge into a target: below the amount the shopper pays for shipping, above it they don't. A common approach is to set it somewhat above the typical order value, so that some shoppers add an item to reach it.

Thresholds often differ by market and change during the year. A store may lower its threshold for a holiday weekend, remove it for members, or set a different one per country and currency. That makes the threshold a promotional lever as well as a policy.

Why it matters for an ecommerce brand

Delivery cost is one of the most common reasons shoppers leave. The Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, an average of 50 studies. In its own survey of US online shoppers (the page does not state the survey year), the top reason, given by 40% of those who abandoned for a reason other than just browsing, was extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees).

Thresholds also change what shoppers buy. In a survey FedEx commissioned from Morning Consult of 2,103 US consumers in May 2024, 81% said they were willing to increase their spending to meet a retailer's free shipping threshold. That is a carrier's own research, so read it as a direction rather than a precise figure.

Competitors' thresholds set the expectation. If comparable stores ship free from $50 and yours starts at $100, shoppers notice at checkout, after they have already decided on the product.

A worked example

This example is hypothetical. A jewelry brand's typical order is $85 and it ships free from $100. Its four closest competitors ship free from $50, $75, $75 and $150.

Against that set, $100 is above the median competitor threshold of $75, so a shopper with an $85 basket pays for shipping with this brand but not with three of its four competitors. The brand tests a $75 threshold for six weeks and compares order value and checkout completion with the six weeks before, while checking that competitors did not change their own thresholds or run shipping promotions during the test.

How to track competitors' thresholds

1. Check each market separately. Thresholds are often set per country and currency.

2. Look where shoppers see it. Site-wide banners, the cart page, the shipping policy page and emails can each mention a different threshold or a temporary offer.

3. Record changes with dates. A lower threshold for a weekend is a promotion; a lower threshold that stays is a policy change.

4. Monitor shipping alongside promotions. RivalSweeper tracks competitors' shipping and payment options and their markets (shipping countries, currencies and languages), and their homepage banners, marketing messages, promotions and newsletters, where free-shipping offers are usually announced. It checks each monitored site daily.

Frequently asked questions

How do you set a free shipping threshold?

Start from your average order value and shipping cost, then compare with the thresholds of the stores your shoppers compare you with. A common approach is to set it a little above the typical order so some shoppers add an item. Test a change for several weeks and check order value and checkout completion, not only revenue.

Does free shipping reduce cart abandonment?

Extra costs are a leading cause of abandonment: in Baymard Institute's survey of US online shoppers, 40% of those who abandoned for a reason other than browsing cited extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees. Removing or lowering the shipping charge addresses that reason, though not the others.

Should my free shipping threshold match my competitors'?

Not necessarily, but you should know theirs. If yours is much higher than comparable stores', shoppers will notice at checkout; if it is much lower, you may be paying for delivery on orders that would have come anyway.
